Works can belong to more than one series. Though the examples here follow more or less a chronological order, there is no evolutionary pattern to these various forms of early narrative art. In Japan, various Manga stories are printed in anthology magazines (like the Shonen Jump) on cheap paper with no color. It’s no coincidence that 1950 was “year zero” for the international reincarnation of the comic, with survivors and immigrants creating new mythologies to efface the past, live the present, and look forward with courage.

My favorite is Adventures from China: Monkey King, which already exists in several volumes, and this is the most “all ages” of their all ages books. Unlike the earlier collage novels that extensively used captions, A Week of Kindness had no captions and was arranged into seven sections, one for each day of the week. When the dead come to us in dream, in search of the truth, all manner of horrors are revealed. Ken Kaneki is an ordinary college student until a violent encounter turns him into the first half-human half-ghoul hybrid.

In a parallel development, the 1920s and 30s saw a revival in the woodcut narrative tradition in the work of Franz Masereel, Lynd Ward, and Milt Gross, whose “silent” 1930 comic He Done Her Wrong was recently reissued to popular acclaim.
